How to sell your car in connecticut

Department of Motor Vehicles

What am I supposed to do when I sell my car?
Complete and sign the reverse side of the Certificate of Title and give it to the new owner along with a Bill of Sale, (form H-31). You may draft your own Bill of Sale, (form H-31) as there is no special form required. The marker plates from your vehicle should be removed and returned to the DMV with the registration certificate; you must ask that they be cancelled. You will be given a receipt when the plates are turned in. Keep this receipt for your records. In addition, contact your local tax assessors office for information on removing the vehicle from the property tax list.

If you need to, you can mail your plates to:

DMV
60 State Street
Wethersfield, CT 06161

Enclose a note requesting that the plates be cancelled. You must also enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope if you would like a receipt mailed to you. The new owner will then be required to register the vehicle in his or her name and apply for a new certificate of title. Please see Requirements for the Registration of a Used Vehicle Previously Registered in Connecticut for more information.

How do I go about donating my vehicle?
You must assign the reverse side of the Certificate of Title to the organization to which you are donating the vehicle. If you are not transferring your registration and plates to another vehicle, then you must turn them in to your local motor vehicle branch office.
